JAGS Spanish teacher, Clare Martin, breaks her record in the Marathon.

The 28th London Marathon will be remembered as a highlight in Clare Martin’s athletic career. Starting as an elite runner, thanks to her surprise win at the Wales Championships earlier this year, Clare ran a superb 26 miles, finishing 31st in the elite women’s race, and 1st for Wales! Professionals running with amateurs and fancy dress fundraisers, bolstered by enthusiastic supporters, is a heady mix and makes for unpredictable results. Clare romped home in a fantastic time of 2 hours 51.08 seconds, knocking six minutes off her personal best! Part of her prize is funding for another top international marathon and she has her sights firmly set on New York this autumn.

Many congratulations to Clare and also to History teacher, Bryony Britten, who ran her first marathon in an impressive 3 hours 36 minutes and 39 seconds.  She has raised funds for the MS Society and for Juba School in Sudan which she visited last autumn (see News item, 28 November 2007).

Some JAGS pupils had been selected to run in the mini-marathon thanks to their outstanding performances in Southwark and London Schools’ Cross-Country competitions. Even the blustery showers couldn’t dampen their spirits as they blazed through their 3 mile course in excellent times for their age-groups. Congratulations to them all! Here are their results (minutes and seconds):
