DONG DONG DONG, HA! Japanese drumming
|
Slightly obsessed with Japanese culture, by their own admission, and already skilled in the art of Ikebana – (flower arranging) and Kabuki (drama), the GCSE Japanese class rose enthusiastically to the challenge of its masterclass in ensemble drumming. The Taiko tutor introduced staff and pupils to the different drums which are played standing, with two sticks, either downwards or across the body, and make full use of gravity, pulling the falling arm down to produce their distinctive, centred timbre. It is a highly dynamic activity and hugely enjoyable, once you’ve got used to the energy needed. The rhythmic, thunderous performance brought many curious people rushing to the hall. Very impressive!
Japanese GCSE started here two years ago, thanks to the soaring popularity of a lunchtime club. The jubilant class is now celebrating outstanding results: everyone who took the exam (including some brave members of staff) achieved A*. Their proud teacher, Hiroshi Okura, is delighted to be taking their study forward to A level.
